    The challenge

Do you ever talk about a shared event with people, but it turns out they have completely different memories about it? This also happens in the communication between doctors and patients. When a patient has a consult with a doctor more often than not, up to 80% of the conversation is forgotten, because of how emotions influence the memory. We want to try and make sure that the patient will be able to look up the important information from the conversation, beyond the facts they usually remember. We will focus on making the process more understandable. We aim to empower the patient to make well considered choices concerning their own life. To make our research reliable we narrowed our scope to a limited target group. The patients we design for have or had breast cancer. After interviewing patients and oncologists we found out that it is important for the patients to be able to have influence on the treatment process. At this moment patients can sense a lack of overview during this process. Our client is Jos Nauts. He is active in the patient council in Nijmegen. He came up with this project and has a very strong influence on the direction of our project. To show him how much we value his view, we decided to name our project after him.

    The solution

We want to give the patient insight about their treatment in a clear schedule. Besides that, we want to create more opportunities to consider the choices about their treatment and rehabilitation. We aim to make patients aware of their future, which will increase their autonomy. Currently, we have a design with three aspects: the diagnose with general information, the treatment process with different options to consider and the consequences of the chosen treatment with respect to the patient’s life. Within the diagnose part, there will be a section for a personal profile of the patient provided with triggering questions. This design will be used by the patient in consultation with the doctor on a digital platform. The patient will have access to all information anytime.
